Los Alamos researchers develop cheaper hydrogen fuel cell

Posted By: Yashpal Sharma | Oct 15 2006

Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have revealed such an astonishing fact about the eliminating the cost of the hydrogen fuel cells that it will make the other fellow workers playing on the project, eat their nails. The two scientists, Rajesh Bashyam and Piotr Zelenay, reveal that they have almost fabricated a low-cost alternative to platinum ued for catalysis in cell; which is the main cause for high cost of fuel cell. The couple has developed a heteroatomic polymer structured complex consisting of cobalt, polymer and carbon that is an environment friendly complex.

The plus point of catalyst is that it can carry catalysis even in acidic medium. Now let me tell you that in the early days of 1990s the cost per KW for a fuel cell was about $2500/kW that has been reduced to $225/kW. But the innovative-hands are trying to reduce it up to $25-$30/kW.

Really a great development in the field of fuel cell research! It'd considerably eliminate the need of pesky platinum material.
