LightSpeed binoculars use infrared LEDs for communication

Binoculars, ever since they were invented, have been used for one purpose: clearly seeing objects far away. Technical advances did make additions to binoculars, but they just added features for clear vision, night vision and the like. The LightSpeed Binoculars by Torrey Pines Logic intend to change all that, making the binoculars a comprehensive communication device. Other than the usual functions of a binocular, LightSpeed also offers video and audio communication.

The communication part is handled by infrared LEDs that work with embedded USB and Ethernet adapters and receivers for voice and video transfer. This obviously has advantages for military and covert operations. Torrey Pines Logic sees non-military applications as well, including airports and locations where ground-based communication can be difficult.
