Self healing polymer fixes itself under UV rays, makes cars etc scratch-free

Say good-bye to polish that promises to repair cracks on your car as a simple flash is all ready to replace the polish and give your car a clean and new look. It's no joke. Incredible but true!

How can a flash repair cracks?

Whenever your vehicles or anything for that matter coated with paint encounters with a rough object, it develops crack. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have used polymer for bridging the gaps between paint. According to researchers, the polymer would be placed on the metal having the cracks. It is placed in the affected part. Focusing UV light on polymer would make it melt and once the light is switched off the liquid part would become hard and fill the gap and erase cracks without affecting the color of the car of the damaged piece just in a flash.

Speaking about the chemistry of it, Andrew Lovinger, program director at National Science Foundation's Division Materials Research said,

There are people working both on the chemistry of creating this kind of matter, on the properties and the processing and even on the theoretical and cyber tools to make that possible. Having scientists and engineers all working together in all of these areas with that vision may one day lead us to any kind of material or matter we will be able to design from scratch, pardon the pun, and may be able to design for any kind of property.

The researchers have also said that this method wouldn't be a costly affair as the use of polymer was inexpensive. While only Ultra-Violet rays are used to melt polymer in the process, the researchers are further looking into the use of other lights such as blue lights in the process. Though it's still a doubt if people would use this technique at home, the mechanics are going to use it for sure.
