Lawsuit Delays the Production of SED Displays

Posted By: Anupam Jolly | Jan 2 2007

The ongoing battle between Canon and Nano-Proprietary has further delayed the introduction of SED displays by Toshiba.

SED is a new technology meaning Surface-Conduction Electron-Emitted display. This technology can be useful in making TVs that support full HD resolution and are 40-inches in diameter and still only a few centimeters thick.

The lawsuit revolves around the patent of the technology that was originally with Nano-Proprietary. The company then licensed Canon to use the technology. But after getting the license Canon partnered with Toshiba to develop SED Displays.

Now after the partnership is done and both the companies have agreed to develop the high end TV then Nano-Proprietary has filed a lawsuit that they had given the license to Canon and not to a team of Canon and Toshiba. But the lawsuit has not stopped the duo from announcing that they will start the production in July.

The suit was filed in April 2005 and the trial date has been fixed as May 2007.

Toshiba has already cancelled the launch of the 55-inch SED at CES-2007. But they have also commented that the reason for the cancellation is neither a technical problem nor a business related issue.

According to me the duo will be looking for an out of court settlement with Nano-Proprietary.
