Television producers can soon find an effective method of measuring the true ratings of the popularity of their comedy shows – a Laughometer. This invention of the researchers at Japan’s Kansai University has the capability not only of measuring the volume of laughter but also is capable of distinguishing between a fake and a genuine laughter by measuring the difference in vibration of the diaphragm. The new unit of measuring laughter is ‘aH’. With laughter therapy emerging as a new medicine-free alternative health-care therapy, scientists can now actually deduce the physiological affects of laughter and its side effects if any. The Laughometer consists of a series of electrode sensors attached to a person’s cheeks, chests and abdomen that measures the bioelectric current generated by certain body muscles as a person laughs. The sensor data are sent to a computer where a specially designed software measures and analyzes laughter. Soon we will be prescribed by doctors to have specified units of aH everyday for sound health.
