Students at UC Berkeley have developed a laser scanners embedded backpack which scans the surroundings and creates instant 3D models of the same. The laser scanners and sensors of the backpack, which lugged on the back roams the hallway, taking images of the structure around and then automatically stitches these different images into a seamless panorama. Courtesy a software governing the 3D reconstruction turns these pictures into maps, which for its application could someday be merged with Google Maps. Using this street mapping system could also have the facility of mapping the famous buildings et al. Head down for the video representation.
