Largest methane capture system converts electricity from cattle waste

Everyone’s aware of the power crunch worldwide, but there are only a few who actually do something to work out ways to mend the same. Huishan Dairy in China has taken an initiative to transform methane from fermented cow manure into power. The diary takes poop from 60,000 cows and converts it into electricity generating about 5.66 megawatts of power that’s good enough to power almost 3500 American homes. The system here involves an anaerobic digester that breaks down cattle waste into gases, which when exposed to iron oxide in hydrodesulfurization removes corrosive hydrogen sulfide. This leaves out biogas which can be easily burned for electricity courtesy four GE Jenbacher engines.
