Kenyan student develops solar-powered forest fire detecting device

There have been wide-ranging strategies adopted to prevent forest fires, an outbreak of which destroys homes and property located in the vicinity. Now, extending an individual stride in the way, 24-year-old Pascal Katana, an engineering student from University of Nairobi, Kenya, has invented a device that detects forest fire outbreaks automatically. The device that consists of heat sensors programmed to detect temperatures over 45 degrees Celsius, on detecting fire relays its information to a forest station via a mobile phone. Powered by five volts solar panel, this device still has to go through trials before it can be granted patent protection; nonetheless, it’s a potentially useful one.
