Japanese Grape-DR is world’s most eco-friendly supercomputer

Japanese supercomputer at the Department of Information Science at the University of Tokyo is dubbed Grape-DR and is touted to be the most environmentally-friendly supercomputer out there. Stuffed in with 64 Intel Core i7-920 processors and 4 Grape-DR accelerator chips, each of which can achieve 200 gigaflops with only 50-watts of power, making the supercomputer by five times. Grape-DR developed by professor Kei Hiraki of the University and a research group led by Jyunichiro Makino, professor at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, was ranked first in the June edition of the "Little Green500 List” - list of 500 green supercomputers.

The Japanese system’s performance per unit power consumption is 815.43 MFLOPS/W in comparison to IBM’s second placed machine’s 773.38 MFLOPS/W. Because being green doesn’t necessarily add speed to the supercomputer, which is evident with Grape-DR that ranks 500th on the Top500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers.
