Everything is on the move, trains are rolling, automobiles are firing up the streets (not to forget, the F1 drivers melting down the tires), people too are commuting on foot or on bicycles, and so are thousands of turnstiles in the railway stations.
Movement burns energy and apparently, transfers it in some other form - capture it if you can. This is what researchers at The East Japan Railway Company (JR-East) are doing nowadays by hooking a generator to the turnstiles in the railway stations in Japan and generating electricity. The idea seems feasible and would make stations more eco-friendly, providing massive supplementary human-generated power. Although the amount of power produced is negligible, however, imagine a busy station where thousands of passengers pass the gates. We can apply the same technique to wheels moving round the clock, hooking them with small generators and storing as much power as we can.
