Jailbreaking has been in the internet cloud ever since the iPhone was launched, with the first jailbreaking method released way back in summer 2007. It started with Pwnage tools unlocking you iPhone as it is only distributed by AT&T in USA, and if you are living in any other country to use an iPhone unlocking is a must. Then came Pwnage tools for jailbreaking your iPhone, that allow for uninterrupted running of third-party application on your Apple device(s). Over the years it has been a game of cat & mouse between jailbreak community & Apple.

Apple releases an update to safeguard iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad from any jailbreaking activities, and in no time iPhone Dev Teams come up with magic tools to cast a spell on the iPhone. Jailbreaking is not a certified activity by any means; so it is bound to have the good’s hinged to the undesirable consequences that may pinch you in the long run.

# Good things that come with jailbreaking

• You can run any third-party applications (via Cydia and Installer) that normally won’t run on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch because of the firmware restrictions put in place by Apple.

• If you are going to use Apple device a country other than USA; unlocking your iPhone/iPod Touch gives you the liberty to use Apple device with any network vendor. Unlocking your iPad (in the future) will allow you to run TMobile network at EDGE speeds.

• Customizing the look and feel of your device by applying custom build themes and applications. Without jailbreaking you’ll have live with the same old looking interface.

• It allows you to run any code that in not authorized by Apple on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.

• With a jailbroken iPhone you can install lightweight version of HTTP server (as iPhone is a trimmed down version of Mac OS X having Unix core). SSH daemon is the most common tool used for this, which can be used to import or exprot files. For example if you want o transfer a ringtone file to other iPhone.

# Undesirable results that may pinch in the long-run

• Unexpected crashes/freezes of your Apple device, especially while running apps.

• Jailbreaking opens the windows for hackers to steal personal information, perform wireless network attacks or install malware that can damage your computer too.

• Most of the hacked Apple devices have been plagued with depleted battery life; which has been evident on the iPhone, iPod and iPad.

• You may encounter dropped calls, slow data connections or inaccurate location data.

• Jailbreaking closes the door on important updates that Apple may have to offer in the future.

• Apple’s warranty notification clearly suggests that unauthorized modification of the Apple firmware OS is a violation of the end-user license agreement, and Apple may deny service for your device.

• Push notification applications such as MobileMe and Exchange have been known to have problems synchronizing with their servers on jailbroken Apple devices.

• Jailbreaking lets you run third-party applications on your device, since these apps are not validated by Apple so they may damage the firmware of your device.
