Allan Greenleaf, professor of Mathematics at the University of Rochester has developed a new mathematical theory that can predict some of the weird things that can happen inside a cloak.
In October this year there was a breakthrough in the Cloaking technology when a professor at the Duke University was successful in cloaking a copper disk and rendering it invisible.
Greenleaf and his team decided to improve the work done by the researchers at the Duke University and used their own research in this process. But they were facing a major problem deciding what should be there in the cloaked region.
Greenleaf and his team used sophisticated mathematics to understand what will happen in the cloaked region. They got all results as per expectations when they applied the Helmholtz equations, but the results dramatically changed when they applied the Maxwell’s equations. These Maxwell’s equations said that simple things can be cloaked easily without any problem, but any thing that emits any kind of electromagnetic radiation will change the behavior of the cloaking device.
This analysis revealed some surprises. They included that if we clone any person and that person tries to look out of the cloak then he/she would be faced by a mirror in every direction and if the person turns on a flashlight then all the light will shine back at him, no matter where the person points it.
Greenleaf then determined that if they inserted conductive linings inside the cloak then they would easily bypass this phenomenon.
Moreover the researchers commented that they will only be able to cloak a device in a predefined wavelength for example if they cloaked the device for a red color wavelength then the device will only be invisible in red color and will be visible in all other colors.
Both the researchers are now working on some other problems in the device and will soon come up with some invisibility criteria that can make humans go invisible...!
