Internet chess table: Play virtually on a 3D board with real pieces

We’ve seen a host of DIY chess tables and pieces, this low cost Internet chess table is one of the most innovative of them all. The table enables player to play the game over freechess.org server using a 3D board and real chess pieces. The user’s moves are captured by a visual recognition system courtesy a webcam and sent over the server, while the opponents moves are displayed on a DIY 20W LED low-resolution LCD projector on an opaque surface. The LCD projector besides displaying the opponents moves also shows information of the game. An interface software has been developed to connect the display and webcam with a PC via USB and to create the required connection with freechess.org. Read more on the project here.
