Internet Chess Table for interactive gameplay with real chess pieces
Internet chess server freechess.org lets you play chess with random opponents in a virtual 2D environment, which is a bit different than the real-time gameplay with real chess pieces. Courtesy of a DIY project Internet-Chess-Table, these two ways of playing chess got a new better DIY make. There are USB input device boards available, but they can’t display moves of the opponent, whereas this DIY make displays the moves indicated with an arrow. Own moves are relayed using a webcam, and these moves are recognized and sent to the internet server to the opposing player.

Using a low-cost multi-touch system that uses the shadow of the chess pieces to detect current position, relays the information back to freechess.org server via the images taken with a webcam from bottom-up. A DIY LCD projector (with 20W LED for lighting) having 128X64 pixel resolution, old CPU cooler and lenses make-up the hardware used for this DIY Internet-Chess-Table.
