Researchers at the Lancaster University, UK, have developed small sensors that can be installed in rivers and that can warn us if there is an impending flood.

These sensors will be installed in rivers that usually flood and presently two of the thirteen sensors have been installed in River Ribble, which often floods around Christmas.

Each of these sensors is smaller than the size of the human Heart and is powered by batteries and solar panels, it also has a computer unit which is of the size of a chewing gum and has processor which is as powerful as those in the modern cell phones.

The sensors are positioned within tens of meters of each other and they can communicate with the other sensors using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth antennas. If the river's behavior starts to change then these sensors send a wireless warning containing the details.

Presently these sensors just send a warning signal to the lab in Lancaster but in future they can also warn people who live in the immediate vicinity by SMS messages or other means like Electronic billboard warning systems.
