It seems microcontrollers have evolved to such a stage that very soon human impulses and reactions will also be controlled by them. If such a day does arise then, it would be really sad, but then our own laziness is responsible for it. It seems we are getting too busy for our cardio as we are hot on tracks that chase cash. In all this mayhem, technology is supposed to be our aid, helping us relax and keeping us fit as a fiddle. It is a bit ironic how man wants to lay on the couch the whole day watching John Rambo wreck havoc and then feel that all that watching should make him look like one too! Anyway, since I do not have a whole day to rant, whine and complain about how technology is making our lives just more dependant and since I don’t want to sound like a grumpy 60 year old stuck in the 1970’s, let us just move on with the stuff on hand. Intellidrug implant is a prosthetic that is put in your dental structure and it is the apparent boon to all those people who forget to take their medicine. The device is just two molars in size and ensures that patients take the correct amount of medicine, at precisely the correct time.
Electronic and software components embedded in the prosthetic allow doctors to adjust doses during the course of treatment and also track the history of the therapy. It is made of stainless steel and polymers and is comprised of a drug reservoir, a micro-fluidic duct, an electrically controlled valve, sensors, and two batteries. In short, it is a mini drug shop in your own mouth.
Ok, maybe not a shop but a small little supply tank where you store what you need to swallow to stay alive, fit and see the dawn the next day. So now you go once in 6 months to your doctor and all he will ask you is for which type of refill you have come. Maybe they have refill station along the highway which say, “Get your Aspirin refill here!” The device is indeed great for old patients with dementia. It even comes with a remote, so you can control the drug levels that are flowing directly in to the oral cavity of your grandparents.
What more, if they start one of their hysterical tantrums or boring lectures, you can just let that sleeping pill take effect with the touch of a button. The idea is good, but it is ridiculous how we remember to eat, sleep, shop and even hit on the girl that sits at the reception for those few hours but conveniently forget taking things that keep us alive and ticking. At least on a positive note, here is finally one prosthetic that may not be too popular with the girls. On second thought though, they could give their guys a Viagra refill and control the remote. Irrespective of what the future for IntelliDrug is, it is surely not something that I’m going to drool on.
