Intel lifts curtain off Light Peak interconnect, the future of data transfer

Light Peak optical interconnect is the new high-speed optical interface from Intel. It is expected to replace USB, DisplayPort and HDMI, all in one go and it also keeps the capability to transfer data at 10Gbits/sec in both directions. It can also encode data at 12.5Gbits/sec across four laser beams, that too with different wavelengths. Yielding a bandwidth of 50Gbits/sec, this interface works with the process called silicon photonics, which is manifested with the help of an indium phosphide hybrid laser inside the controller chip. And, if we are to believe it, this technology might make its inroads to the markets in three or five years.
