Intel demonstrates prowess of an energy-efficient 48-core processor

Intel may just push processing limits to an extent where even the human brain may become slower than the computer. And that’s exactly what the company is hoping from the 1.3-billion transistors and fully programmable 48-core processor dubbed the Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC), which Intel demonstrated in San Francisco yesterday.

It may be very early to state the future of the Single-chip Cloud Computer, but we know that the chips will be able to run standard software of Intel's x86 chips like its Pentium and Core models. Claiming 10 to 20 times more processing power than the Intel Core processors, the SCC will be extremely energy efficient, using as little as 25 watts of power to operate.

It isn’t a product yet and could therefore be a good platform for conducting research, for which Intel is offering research partners the chips to develop new applications for the next generation of multicore processors.
