Integrated device makes single-handed driving possible for the disabled

All the devices that we use are meant for the general population. And most manufacturers rarely even think for a moment the fact that a big part of the population cannot use their devices due to some or the other disability. Driving is one necessity which we all take up as soon as we are legally allowed to do so. But here again, a disabled person might never be able to drive.

Asociación RUVID, a consortium of five Spanish research institutes and companies have come together to form a unique device. This device integrates all the controls required for driving, i.e. steering, braking, changing gears, accelerating. This device has been specifically made for disabled people who can use the device and drive just as well as other people, with only one hand. The researchers have also taken into consideration the fact that most disabled people might not be very strong in their one hand, which is why the device is completely electronically controlled.

Drivers are usually tuned to the way the machine reacts to their movements, and in order to simulate a similar sensation motors have been added within the device. Of course, this does not mean that only disabled people may use the device, it might even be used by people who find it difficult to co-ordinate their hands and legs at the same time.

One of the RUVID members, the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia, recently presented the prototype at the 13th EAEC European Automotive Congress, in Spain. With this device, at least people who have a disadvantage will be able to comfortably move from one point to another without anyone's help.
