One of the things that causes us a great deal of annoyance is the sight of a flat tire just as when we have an urgent task at hand, right? Well, its time these worries were brought to an end. Coda Development has already come up with a tire design that would ensure that tires remain inflated, all the time! The new tire design completely does away with the hassles of repeatedly having to check the air-pressure of the tires of your car. The new tires are self-inflating, so that they can be inflated at the same time while you are driving. In fact, driving would ensure proper air pressure in the tires. The car makes use of a compressed air tank for inflating the tires. As you start driving, the process of inflation starts: The tire revolves and air goes in the reservoir part of the tube through the valve. The movement of the tire then pushes the air to the peristaltic part of the tube (i.e the tire).. Then, the air moves into the tire itself, thereby inflating the latter. This process continues until the air pressure in the reservoir tube equals the tire pressure.
The peristaltic part of the tube (that acts as an air-flow regulator) is similar to the peristaltic pumps used for providing medication through IV-s at hospitals. In this innovative and useful new tire design plan, Coda uses the car’s steering wheel as the rotating device that pulls the contents of the tube to the other end. In this case, of course, the tube is the inflated tire itself. The new tire design also has a pressure sensitive valve that continuously ensures that the tire pressures remain just right.
The new car-design is expected to be cost-effective too, compared to other similar products. Not many separate devices are used in this system, enhancing the tire’s reliability while making it relatively cheaper. Nor does the system depend on any external sources for power. The concept of self-inflated tires may not be entirely new, but what makes the Coda Development tire design stand out, is its unique and convenient mechanism of inflating the tires. The new and inventive designs would be unveiled by Coda Technology in mid-April, at the 2008 SAE World Congress.
