Considering reports of India’s IT infrastructure being on target, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in India, has considered developing its own operating system. Because security is the main concern in various institutions like banks and defense establishments, and because all assets that are developed for research and development need to be fully secured, operating systems made within the confines of the country unlike the presently used vulnerable operating systems made outside the country should make a foolproof system, thus prevent hacking into the country’s systems.

For the purpose, Defense Research and Development Organization has setup a software development center in New Delhi and Bangalore each, which to begin with will have 25 scientists each. The team will be coordinating for the same with institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology. According to V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and DRDO Director-General, the operating system, once ready, would also have commercial use too.
