We’d all been desperately waiting to see this $10 wonder since it was first announced in 2007, and finally it was yesterday (3rd February ’09) when the government of India made it official. Backed by HCL, the cheapest laptop ever will be available for Rs 500 ($10) - a blow to the tech frenzy beyond India that haven’t been able to deliver a computing device below the $100 tag. Developed in support of IT Madras, Indian Institute of Science and B Tech students, this ultra low-cost device has 2GB of extendable memory and can be charged with as less as 2 watt power. Designed for education the $10 laptop will be capable of projecting on a screen, and also boasts a swiveling LCD screen. The device will initially be priced at $20 but would be reduced to $10 with economies of scale over a six-month period. The world that thought India wouldn't be able to deliver something as techie and cheap, could go take a plunge, while others enjoy the video.
