New breakthrough could double the efficiency of present solar cells

We have been witnessing a number of solar powered gizmos lately. Now, a professor at the University of Idaho is formulating a new type of solar cell that would make solar energy commercially feasible. The breakthrough concept, if successful, could help U.S. to get rid of its oil-dependency.

Dr. Pam Shapiro and her team will embed quantum dots (made of copper, indium, and selenium) between the layers of a solar cell in order to absorb the energy that is usually wasted owing to overheating. The resulting form of solar cell will be two times more efficient than the current solar cells.

Shapiro said:

People are trying to make solar cells that are more efficient. These solar cells based on quantum dots aim to make better use of that excess energy.
