Beyond the distinctive bulbous form and the inherent sci-fi vibe, the above pictured conception is actually an ingenious concept of a mine detection system. In place of land based mechanisms, designer Filippo Cuttica has envisaged the ICARO - an aerial mine detection system based upon the essentials of practicality and convenience. The collective approach integrates safety, user-friendliness with features of cost-effectiveness.

The whole system will fundamentally comprise of three elements - firstly a conspicuously bulbous inflatable aerial vehicle that will be filled with helium and can be maneuvered with remote control. There will also be a picket base for storage of all the paraphernalia related to mining, and thirdly there will be a backpack incorporated with it.
From the perspective of functionality, the ICARO concept has been conceived as a portable system that can be disassembled and transported in a lightweight backpack. Moreover, in consideration of safety the picket base can be applied at the ground level, while the whole mechanism can be controlled by a power cable drawn from the flying vehicle.
The easy handling facilitated by the relatively simplistic and portable technology will make the conception far more adaptable to users, especially in comparison to manual mine detectors. Furthermore, regarding energy efficiency, the aerial craft will be fueled by helium, a light nonflammable gas that would accentuate upon the overall mobility of the system when traveling in mid-air. The range will also get substantially increased, thus expediting the critical (time taking) procedure of mine mapping.
