Emotiv is the latest and the best brain computer interface that has recently been developed by researchers.

These researchers are also launching a SDK for game developers.

According to the developers of this amazing technology it is the first brain computer interface technology that can detect both conscious and non-conscious emotions of a human.

The interface is a series of applications each of which performs a different task. The main applications are 3D characters that reflect the player’s expressions and the manipulation of virtual objects using the player’s thoughts to do so.

Parts of the EDK:

The EDK or Emotiv Development Kit comprises a prototype headset with multiple sensors for monitoring the brain activity. It also has a series of applications that include:

• Expressiv™ Suite:
This application can identify facial expressions in real-time allowing developers to create 3D characters that respond to the expressions of the player such as smiles and winks.

• Affectiv™ Suite: This application measures the player’s emotional state and allows the game to respond to the emotional state of the player.

• Cognitiv™ Suite: This application detects the conscious thoughts of the player and allows them to manipulate objects in the virtual environment. The above series of pictures demonstrate this application when the user is able to move a stone up or down just by thinking about it. The player is using hands for concentrating but the application can also be used without moving hands.

How it works:

The human brain contains about 100 billion nerve cells and neurons. These neurons have an electrical activity that can be monitored using EEG. This technology observes the individual’s brain activity and then processes it so that they can be applied to the application.

Areas of Application:

The technology is likely to find many application areas which include interactive television, medicine and security.
