HP's 'gesture keyboard' goes beyond the alphabets

Life without computers is unimaginable today, doesn't matter where you are, and Hewlett-Packard's new 'gesture keyboard', developed at HP's research unit in Bangalore, India, has made it more accessible, especially to users who don't understand non-Western languages.

The new keyboard pad priced between $45 and $50 allows users to access computer just like web browsing via a stylus and tablet. It's a big breakthrough as far as computer accessibility is concerned, allowing millions of people whose languages use scripts, rather than the Roman alphabet.

Just write in Hindi on the digitized pad and the 'gesture keyboard' packed with handwriting-recognition software will transfer it to the desktop screen. The pad eliminates the tedious use of keyboard with different keys assigned to different script characters that require close to 1,000 buttons.

In India where only 30% out of the 83% of the urban population can read and write English, the technology will definitely prove handy. But, the gesture keyboard works with only two languages - Hindi and Kannada, what about others?
