HOW TO prolong life of lithium-based batteries

I agree with Isidor Buchmann's point raised here that lithium-ion batteries would ultimately revolutionize the power supply system replacing the nickel and lead based batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries too are infants and demand a hell lot work and improvement, especially with respect to the use of chemical combinations and life.

Here Isidor suggests how we can prolong their life cycle. A lithium-ion battery must be charged more often and it'll be better if we don't allow it to run out completely. That puts in extra load on the battery and results in more wear and tear. In stead, keep recharging it even in case of partial discharges. The average life of a lithium-ion battery is between 2-3 years but it can be prolonged by controlling the temperature and state-of-charge. At high temperatures a regular laptop battery lasts for only 12-18 months.
