How To: Prevent Windows 7 from rebooting after Windows update

Posted By: Gaurav Sood | Apr 13 2010

Keeping your automatic updates turned-on in Windows 7 (or any OS version) is good for automatically installing major Windows plug-ins and software updates. Just one irk though, Windows automatically reboots after an update is complete. The automatic update gets even more frustrating if you are downloading say a movie overnight and midway your Windows update completes and the PC shuts-down. Don't worry, there is a simple tweak to do away with the unwanted irk.

# Go to Start->Run->regedit, then search for the following entry:

My ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindows Update

.

# Now, here create a DWord (32-bit) Value as:

NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers

windows 7 regedit for stopping automatic updates

Set the value to 1, if you don't find this key then right click on Windows Folder and create the Windows update key manually.
