How to delete a friend on Facebook

Everyone has a Facebook account these days. Many of you invariably end up adding people you do not really want to be around. These people comment on your photos, comment on your post, write on your walls, and bother you for no particular reason. Sometimes you wish you could make them go away and leave you alone. Well, at least you can make them go away from your Facebook account and delete them.

Complexity level: Basic

Time required:1-2 minutes

Estimated cost: Nil

Resources required:

  1. A computer with an internet connection
  2. Your Facebook account
Instructions:

1. Log in

Go to www.facebook.com. Log in to your Facebook account using your email address/username and password.

2. Locate friend

At the top of the page you will see a blue bar that says "Home Profile Find Friends Account." Click on "Account" and a drop down menu will open. Click on "Edit Friends." This is the first option in the drop down menu when you click on accounts. You will be directed to a new page. In the bar on the top of the friends list, you will find the words "recently interacted" and an arrow next to that. Click on the arrow. A drop down menu will open. Select "All friends." This is the first option in the drop down menu. A new list of friends will appear which will show all your friends. Scroll down to locate your friend in the list. The list is in the alphabetical order. Alternatively, you can type in his/her name in the search box. Locate the name of the friend you wish to delete. You will see a cross next to his/her name. Click on the cross. You will get a prompt "Are you sure you want to remove ...... as your friend?" Click on remove from friends.

3. Confirm

Click on profile in the blue bar on the top-right corner. Click on friends in the left-most column. This is the fifth option below your profile picture on the left. See if you can locate that friend in the friends list. If you can, the friend was not deleted from your list. Repeat step 2. If you cannot find the friend on your list, its done!

Say goodbye to those annoying friends!

Frequently asked questions:

Will a person be notified if I remove him from my friends list?

No, but all friends' links are reciprocal. If you remove them from your list, you will be automatically removed from their list as well.

How do I delete a friend request that I have received?

You can delete the friends request on the request page along with other hidden requests too.

Quick tips:

  1. Do not share your password with anyone.
  2. Another way to delete a friend from your list is to click on profile on the top right, in the left-most column, below your profile picture and fifth option from the top, click on friends. Click on see all. Locate your friend by scrolling down or typing his/her name in the search box. Click on the name and open their wall. Scroll down. The third from the last option in the left column is "unfriend." You will be asked if you are sure that you wish to remove that person from your list. Click on "remove from friends" and voila! Its done.
Things to watch out for:

  1. Avoid adding people who you do not know.
  2. Remember to select "See All" or "All categories" if you have trouble locating your friend on your list.
  3. Your friend has only been removed from your friends list. He/she can still search for you on Facebook and attempt to add you again. If your privacy settings allow, he/she may still be able to access your profile, see your photos, comment on them, and leave messages. If you want to cut off all ties, you may want to block this person from your Facebook account.
