How automotive GPS navigation system works
We must be encashing on the benefits of automotive GPS navigation systems installed in our cars, but must never have thought how the whole mapping system works. Craig Ellison, in his wonderful article, gets inside the working of an automotive GPS navigation system. Interestingly, GPS manufacturers have outsourced the mapping and POI (Points of Interest) data collection and maintenance job to two companies, Navteq and Tele Atlas.

Actually, the companies employ vehicles mounted with high-resolution cameras to capture data and images with respect to restricted-speed zones, HOV lanes and highway splits. These images are further stored with special codes or geocodes to be retrieved during navigation.
