The boffins at IBM have developed a brand new memory technology which will now let you store upto half a million songs on your MP3 player, not to mention your MP3 player’s battery lasting for weeks together. This technology, showcased in this month’s Science, technology magazine is called ‘Racetrack Memory‘ and uses electron spin to store data. Unlike hard disks, the racetrack memory’s lack of mechanical parts ensures very high speed reading and writing times which means that you can access and transfer your songs and media very quickly. the lack of mechanical parts and using the electrons themselves virtually make this technology ultra frugal on power consumption. And that is not all, this technology even upstages flash memory as it can virtually last for a lifetime, quite unlike the flash memory which wears out after a few thousand usage cycles. But, don’t expect the Racetrack Memory into your portable devices anytime too soon. IBM predicts that this new technology could make its way into consumers’ devices only in the next decade. Though that is quite far away, we at Gizmowatch are very impressed.
