HEADS Generation II helmet sensor saves soldiers from concussions

If you thought the sniper detecting helmet and first version of the BAE Systems HEADS wasn’t good enough for our soldiers, then it’s time for BAE Systems lately introduced 2nd version of the Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic System to make its mark. Shown at the Farnborough International Air Show this past week, the second generation HEADS sensor is designed especially to detect obvious and not easily detectable post blast impacts on the head leading to traumatic brain injuries.

The helmet has a programmable color LED light which activates during a blast to indicate TBI, thus saving the solider from concussion. The helmet sensors will be RF transmitter enabled which will wirelessly transmit the information to the medical staff. Scheduled to be made available sometime in April 2011, the generation II HEADS sensor besides the indicating a TBI also "indicates the impact direction, magnitude, duration, blast pressures, angular and linear accelerations, plus the exact times of single or multiple blast events."
