Going by the new norms set by the Australian government most of you will need to switch to high-definition by 2012 and for that you will have to buy expensive HDTVs and home theater systems that can receive digital broadcasts.
The only question that needs to be answered here is - Will we gain anything by spending thousands of dollars on the expensive equipment? You will also be able to receive digital broadcasts by installing a digital TV set-top box to your old TV, but what about the digital high-definition content. To receive high quality video you will need high quality equipment, which is quite expensive.
If you go by current market scenario and trends, we ought to say that we too will need HDTVs, but what about the picture quality. Just buying a good TV won’t suffice the purpose, since most TV programs are transmitted in SD and not HD and those who claim to transmit programs in HD actually transmit it at 576i and not 1080i, which is the true HD resolution.
Even standard DVDs don’t provide true HD content and to receive that you need to shell out some more money on buying expensive HD DVD or Blu-Ray players as well.
To really tempt me into buying the equipment, I need companies to warrant me true HD broadcasts at 1080i; else, I am quite satisfied with what I already have...what say?
