Geeks at MIT are set to supply laptops for children in developing countries and poor children as well under the $100 laptop program. Apart from few petty concerns (cost, timing and shipping), the major apprehension that is pulling the program back is unavailability of power or electricity, especially in the remoter areas of Africa, to connect the laptop to internet.
Green Wi-Fi, moderately funded by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), has come up with a solar powered wireless that runs on solar power and would be less expensive than setting up a wired network in the hard terrain.
Equipped with a weatherproof solar panel, capable of bringing all kinds of information to isolated areas, the new mechanism is a modified version of Netgear WGT634U router.
Still lots of work is required to find out a solution for longer duration rains, but it is just a beginning and you can always hope for improvement.
