One could so easily relate France with fashion, models, seacoasts, natural scenery, and an open society, but to visit the island of Nantes and see those mechanical creatures come alive is altogether an inexpressible experience. Francois Delaroziere and Pierre Orefice have created a nirvana there in the great naves of old shipyards. They call their artistic project The Machines de L’île. Among numerous machine-animals, what my favorite is the great elephant like the Sultan’s, but a speck larger at 12 meters tall. It’s made out of steel and wood, and is extremely kinetic. It’s capacious enough to carry 30 passengers on its back for a 30 minute jaunt. So, if you love these untamed mortals and are hesitant to go closer at one fell swoop, here stands your best chance to lay a hand on them.
