3D viewing has been an object of fascination and interest for the tech-savvy lot, and they are certainly going to admire Glasses-free 3D that has come to iPad 2. iPad 2 and its front-facing camera have paved the way of some tech wizardry leading to a 3D experience on a 2D screen, something that you are surely going to love. Researchers in France, Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay from the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble at the EHCI Research Group, are to be credited for the creation of this demo for iPad 2.

This technique gives iPad 2 a 3D experience without needing glasses. Interestingly, it doesn't need an accelerometer either. It actually uses the movements of the user's head as picked by the front facing camera of iPad 2. The researchers have combined the 'head-tracking technology' with basic 3D graphics to develop this rich 3D experience. As in the demo, graphics on screen change according to the movement of the user's head, thus giving illusion of three dimensional movement of the objects on screen. Undoubtedly, it can be termed as one of the most impressive tech demos you'd have come across recently.
Glasses free 3D has been in news recently with Nintendo deploying it in its latest 3DS portable gaming consoles. Now with this curiosity evoking demo, its likely that even Apple may plan to use this technology to enrich the gaming experience that next-gen ipod's may give. Currently it's nothing more than a tech demo and there isn't any apps available too. But keep waiting, time surely has a few in store for you.
