Imagine walking into a room and the TV gets automatically tuned in to your favorite channel! Crazy, right? But all this could be a truth in another five years’ time with Toshiba working on a technology they call “gesture recognition system.” There is still a lot of time before we get to use such technology at home but, the researchers have managed to get things going in the research centers at Cambridge. Until now, they have succeeded in making the TV respond to hand gestures (recognized by a mounted camera) that jam the screen, flip channels and even increase or decrease the volume. The challenge, though, is to make the TV recognize the difference between an intended gesture and an unintentional movement, for otherwise even a sneeze could cause a problem. Upon complete development, the technology could be applied to computers as well.
