GE developing RFID sensors to detect airbone chemicals and diseases

The technology development wing of General Electric - GE Global Research will develop wearable Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors to alert the wearer against chemical agents and diseases. Funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, these sensors, which can be made to a size smaller than a penny, will combine RFID tracking capabilities with a unique gas sensing ability to detect harmful chemicals in the air. Besides being used to provide real-time information of the potentially harmful chemicals in the air, these sensors could also be used as analyzers for a person’s breath and/or integrated into ID badges to serves as warning systems, thus functioning as biomarkers to pick up early signs of diabetes and cancer.
