Gamera: A human powered helicopter to set the world record with female pilot onboard

We had enough of those highfalutin flying robots, and now it's time for some 'down to earth' or in this case, up over earth - human touch. In a fascinating turn of events, a student team from A. James Clark School of Engineering has contrived the 'Gamera', which by the way is a human powered helicopter.

Basically having a X shaped frame with rotors at each end, the pilot capsule (or cockpit if you like) is suspended in the middle. The specs say, each crossbar of the frame is 60 feet long, and each rotor is 42 feet in diameter. But the important element in this case is the ultra-light weight of the conception, as the whole contraption is constructed from a composite of balsa, foam, mylar, carbon fiber and "other lightweight materials."

The above mentioned composition makes the machine remarkably agile as well as buoyant at only 210 pounds, even including the pilot. With this, the creators aim to break the world record with a human powered helicopter, manoeuvred by a female. And as for accolades, the conception also has a chance to win the prestigious Sikorsky Prize.
