‘Just Cast’ rods are about 50% carrot.’ What does it feel like after reading this line? You might be taking it as a shaggy dog story. But, it’s the reality. Two Scottish scientists have found a new technique to convert the carrots (vegetable) into an advanced material that could be further employed to make everything from fishing rods to warships.
They have developed the material named ‘Curran’, which they have used to make a rod for fly fishing. But, they anticipate this material to be used to make snowboards, car parts, engineering components and even battleships. Dr Hepworth believes the Curran to be one of the major material innovations since the introduction of carbon fibre over 30 years ago.
Their latest product “Just Cast” rods are around 50 per cent carrot with each one made from 2kgs of the vegetables. Both the scientists are experimenting with other vegetables like turnips, swede and parsnips too. Moreover, the new material is also more environment-friendly than existing methods using glass and carbon fibres.
So, the Curran (or the carrots) is going to revolutionize everything from fishing-rods to battleships. Yes, a gigantic carrot battleship!
