Fujitsu intends to take magnetic recording density to 1 Tb per square inch

Fujitsu claims to have developed the world's first optical device that is capable of generating a beam less than 100nm across. The company says that thermally-assisted recording (TAR) opens the doors for next-gen high-capacity hard disks.

The new device is actually a fine laser that works on the concept of heating the disk surface that makes the recording easier on the particular spot. The multi-layered optical element will take magnetic recording density to 1 Terabit per square inch. This has taken precedence over the 421 Gigabits per square inch recording set by Seagate earlier.

Fujitsu has claimed that the TAR will allow the hard disk makers to develop drives that will be ten times more proficient than the present ones. This development will certainly stake the future of hard drives on TAR.
