FSMLabs' RTLinux: World's first single-core Linux phone

Modern handsets use two microprocessors to handle all the software applications and communication protocols but also load it with extra BOM cost, space and power consumption. However, our dream of single processor based handsets melting down all these woes is now realized with the introduction of world's first Linux mobile phone based on a single processor core successfully demonstrated by FSMLabs and Infineon Technologies.

'The prototype runs on a single ARM9 core running FSMLabs's RTLinux real-time Linux OS, along with a functional 2G/3G (WCDMA/EDGE/GPRS/GSM) stack from Infineon's wholly-owned subsidiary, Comneon.'
FSMLabs is planning to use the technology in other fields too apart from cell phones. We can expect RTLinux-powered 2.5G and 3G mobile phones to hit the market soon.
