Fresh Apple Pickings #4: Extracting the juice out of the new Apple Mac Mini

I agree with Mike Langberg's statement that Steve Jobs leave no stone unturned to 'over sell' his company's accomplishments. But on Tuesday, he rather underplayed himself and uncovered the new iPod speaker system and an upgraded version of the Mac Mini at Apple's Cupertino headquarters. Here let's take on the new polished edges of the cube. Getting into the core of the 'digital living room' the new software hooks the mini to the television screen instead of a computer monitor.

The cube grabs the whole lot of digital data including music, phone calls, movies, instant messages, television, e-mail and more. The most appreciating move made by Apple was the blending of Bonjour and Front Row. Bonjour facilitates easy networking by automatically identifying and connecting to other Bonjour-compatible devices such Apple's Airport Express wireless base station. Front Row, the on-screen interface, facilitates easy access to music, movies and photos.

So, now, just hook on the mac mini to your big screen digital TV and flip around the world with the remote via Front Row streaming data from other systems in your house.

'No configuration. No setup. It's pretty cool,'' Jobs said Tuesday.

All rumors with respect to Mac mini working as a TiVo-like digital video recorder are shattered for now. But still the new Mac Mini gives you an option to add DVR capability via external TV tuners. The crux is, with Bonjour and Front Row Apple definitely gives heat to the other players in the competition.
