Freelz - Advanced Wheelchair that can be maneuvered by teeth-clenching

Tetraplegia is a form of advanced paralysis that can result in partial or total loss of use of all limbs and torso in the patient. The worst case scenario presents to us an acutely bleak picture where one severely injures his/her spinal cord - the biological conduit for motor and sensory information from the brain. So the repercussion of this lack of credible mobility on the part of the patient can result in not only intense physical related predicaments but also a profoundly distressing psychological effect. In a bid to righteously resolve such adverse situations, South Korean company Open Telecom has unveiled Freelz - an advanced Wheelchair Control System that can be maneuvered by just teeth-clenching by the patient.

Comprising of an ergonomic head set, a display module, controller, emergency (safety) stop switch and an ultra-sonic sensor; the system basically utilizes EMG bio-signals generated by teeth-clenching. These signals (conveyed by the heat set) facilitate the interactive control as well as directional attributes of the wheelchair in mechanical motion. The flexible control directly corresponds to teeth-clenching actions like right, left or even both. And to accentuate the level of user interaction and practice, the designers have also incorporated a basic gaming platform (based upon the renowned Tetris) along with text input device in the display module. The types of maneuverable wheelchairs that are supported by the convenient mechanism include PG VR2 and VSI-50. Coming to user comfort, the contraption totally forgoes the paraphernalia of wires and exposed circuitry. The main component of the head gear can be easily charged through an external USB port in less than one hour, which gives around 3 to 6 hours of usability. So, finally we have a conscientious conception that utilizes wireless signals for an enhanced interactive as well as motion based experience for quadriplegic people.
