We all want to have our cellphones packed with all the possible apps we can sneak into a space so small. But since that means having to walk around with a bulky handset, designer Emir Rifat ISIK came up with a stunning fold-away concept that looks pretty sleek when closed but can open up to reveal as many as 5 functional surfaces. Called the Packet, the phone concept was awarded the first place at the Istanbul Design Week 2007 and measures only 5cm x 5cm when closed. Once fully opened, the Packet’s 5 surfaces disclose a keypad, 2 mini keyboards with letter and a centre face with touch-sensitive button areas. The back of the design has a large digital watch on its outer surface. The extremely lightweight and superbly thin concept is made from a touch-sensitive material quite similar to e-paper and can be constructed out of eco-friendly materials if ever put in active production. Although we certainly doubt if the complicated technology will ever make it to mainstream cellphone production, but we certainly think it can inspire many multi-surface handsets in the near future.
