Flying over the Atlantic in a unique Hydro-Kite vehicle

Posted By: Atul Roach | Jun 20 2009

The demons of the translation woes have returned to haunt us and this time it is an amazing wind powered Hydro-Kite that we fail to explain thoroughly. Instead of wrongly informing you about certain aspects it would be better to cater to what was eventually comprehendible. As far as we understand, the Hydro-Kite is a combination of an airplane and a sailboat which has a kite, a cabin and a keel and it desires to clock a record speed time to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

To let that desire materialize it would be have to come to life for real as it is a mere paper design together drawn by 10 students from TU Delft under the guidance of Wubbo Ockels, a former astronaut.

The kite is the top portion of this vehicle and it is a hundred meters above the water and we suppose it has some kind of an integrated cabin. The kite is connected to an airplane-shaped keel through a cable. It is this keel which controls the kite from interfering with the cabin.

It requires winds as strong as 100m/s to come into motion. The strange vehicle gives the feel of a surf but with the strength of several cars (15,000 Nm) helping to commute at 90 miles per hour. You could sail from New York to Cornwall in four days and an hour. Gosh! When are making this for real?
