Flexible Electronics have been the need of today as more and more manufacturers are now moving to rollable displays that can be used in many applications.

The only problem with the technology was that the transistors used in such speeds are not as fast as they should be for use in Microprocessors and other handheld devices.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin, Madison have been successful in developing ultra thin silicon transistors that operate more than 50 times faster than the previous devices.

The advancements has still not made the devices fast enough for their use in Microprocessors but still the tech can be used in making Radar Antennas.

Most of the devices that are used for making flexible electronics rely on the use of transistors made from silicon and other organic polymers. These transistors cannot reach the gigahertz speed which can make them fit for Microprocessors and other high speed devices. But now the researchers have made transistors from high-quality, single-crystal silicon instead of organic polymers and amorphous silicon because electrons move faster in single crystal silicon.

The single crystal silicon is stiff in natural form but if made thin enough then the material can be made to bend.

The researchers have stated that the use of this material has made the transistors achieve speeds of 3.1GHz and the upcoming research will enable them to reach speed up to 7.8GHz. The speeds though fast enough has still not given an answer for the flexible chips that can be used in Microprocessors but still they are a major breakthrough in the field of flexible electronics.
