First light-powered circuit to allow touchscreens to self-power

Posted By: Bharat BhushanSharma | Feb 4 2010

The scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have created a circuit that self-powers itself, based on solar energy. A great prospect for applications involving consumer devices and human brain modding, the solar-powered circuit is first of its kind which acts both as a electrical charger and the computer chip. For now the limit of the amount of electricity generated by the circuit is pretty less to power electronics, but with more effort and understanding similar circuits could be made to emit more energy. This can be achieved in two ways, one, by increasing the number of photovoltaic cells and two, by turning their 2D structures into 3D structures. The potential applications of such circuits are huge, but there isn't a way this new technology can replace their silicon counterparts. Yet, it gives us an opportunity to imagine an era where electronic interface powers itself.
