Posted By: Vishal Dwivedi | Dec 18 2006

San Antonio is now home to the first cyber cafe for people with disabilities. Made by Goodwill Industries, the cafe will provide a good opportunity for the disabled to find a job. The cafe has been specially designed for the disabled with hearing impairments, vision loss and physical restrictions. It offers free access to the expensive assistive technologies embedded to their systems.

The cafe includes two computers that are outfitted with magnifying and reading software. A PC that can be controlled by eye movement without using a mouse and another computer at the cafe allows those with limited mobility to stick a silver dot to their nose or glasses. A screen-mounted reader recognizes the dot's movement, and the user can navigate and type with it. All these technologies will make it much more convenient for the disabled to work on internet. In addition, the cafe will display work from local artists and will also sell food items.

This is a good initiative by the company that will provide the disabled with power to work and will help them extract a lively hood exploring their hidden skills. Goodwill was awarded a $125,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation for this cafe.
