First fully soft-bodied robot that was developed at Tufts University will be displayed at exhibition on “Design and the Elastic Mind” at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from February 24 to May 12, 2008. At this exhibition atleast 200 samples of wild inventions from around the globe will be showcased. This squishable soft-bodied robot is made of silicon elastomer and is 12 inches long. Interdisciplinary research going on at Tufts’ School of Arts & Sciences and School of Engineering has lead to this remarkable invention.
A team led by Professor David Kaplan and Barry Trimmer has used the research work done on neuromechanical system of the Manduca sexta caterpillar and biopolymers’ material properties.
Prof. Trimmer said:
Our work represents the first major effort to design a truly soft-bodied locomoting robot with the workspace capabilities similar to those of a living animal.
